Michael Harvey learnt lettercutting as an assistant to Reynolds Stone and for many years produced hand-lettered book jackets for amongst others, Jonathan Cape, The Bodley Head and Cambridge University Press .

His first typeface design was made for Methuen in 1962. Monotype released Ellington in 1990, and he has produced a number others, including Strayhorn, Studz, Mentor and Braff.

He collaborated widely with Ian Hamilton Finlay, has taught and lectured and written a number of books on lettering.
